One of the most romantic events in a couple’s journey together is often their honeymoon. This event, usually involving a week-long getaway to some exotic location, is typically revered as one of the most romantic times in a couple’s life. However, the origins of the honeymoon have a very different connotation. Appearing for the first time in the 16th Century, this word had a bittersweet meaning. “Honey” referred to the sweetness of the relationship, but “moon” referenced the ever-waning moon, sure to fade quickly as time passed. Later, Norse legend has it that “honey” referred to a honey mead, a very sweet wine made with honey and served hot. This was to be drunk during the first month of marriage (one complete moon cycle) to increase fertility.
Thankfully, today we attach different meanings to old legends and origins. Even if you’re not celebrating a honeymoon, you can certainly celebrate the romance in your relationship with beautiful flowers, gifts, hand-written letters or poetry.
The beautiful Floral Oasis arrangement, shown above, displays many bright blooms in a bubble bowl. What a gorgeous way to show your affection!
