Celebrating a graduate marks one of the most exciting times in a family’s life; there is great pride in the graduate’s accomplishments, as well as optimism for a wide-open future. Graduation ceremonies are steeped in tradition, showcasing customs that originated long ago but still celebrate and honor our students. There are stories behind nearly every aspect of the day, including the origins of the cap and gown, the placement of the tassel, and the ritual of each graduate walking across the stage. Even the iconic processional march, “Pomp and Circumstance”, has an interesting back story. The British military march was played at Yale’s 1905 commencement ceremony to honor its composer and the keynote speaker, Edgar Elgar. The song was so popular it has been embraced ever since.
Flowers have a unique history as well. Getting to know what each specific bloom stands for is a thoughtful way to create an arrangement that is not only beautiful but meaningful. Flowers like orange roses, gladioli, and dahlia represent admiration and pride in accomplishments and are a beautiful way to express these sentiments. Does your graduate embody a spirit of wisdom? An arrangement containing the purple iris will let them know that you have taken notice of how wise they have become; adding sage leaves only accentuates the message. If you are looking for a way to creatively enhance your graduation party décor, choosing roses, carnations, mums or asters, which come in a wide variety of shades, make it easy to feature their school’s colors.
