Memorial Tributes At The Holidays

On December 15, national program Wreaths Across America will perform its annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, along with countless other locations across the country. It’s an effort that resonates for us here at Billy Heroman’s Flowers & Gifts, since we have had the distinct honor of participating in a similar tribute. During the holidays, we’re encouraged to express our gratitude and our love toward family and friends, even the ones we have lost. What better way to do that than through a memorial that acknowledges our vets? In our case, the opportunity came at LSU’s Memorial Oak Grove this past November.

We were humbled to provide the flowers for Memorial Oak Grove’s re-dedication ceremony in honor of the 31 LSU alumni who fought and died in World War I. Thirty-oneĀ current LSU cadets marched to represent those lost, while descendants gathered to pay their respects.

In 1926, 31 live oak saplings were planted to commemorate the brave souls who gave their lives in sacrifice to country. And on November 11 this year, the 100-year anniversary of the end of the war, many gathered at the memorial to remember their forefathers and alumni and to admire the beautiful trees.

Take a moment this season to offer a tribute to the vets who have passed on in your family. Craft a meaningful ritual that will help you feel connected to loved ones during the holidays.
